Top Ten Things To Do In Charlotte- An Addition

For those of you who followed my Top Ten Must See’s in Charlotte, you know we had a  problem… we didn’t quite get to 10. Not because there aren’t Ten, but because there is wide disagreement once you get past the top 5. So, I’ll be publishing more particular Top Ten Lists, or Top 5 lists, things to do with young children, things to do with teenagers, best 5 day trips, you get the picture.

The summer concert series by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra- the traveling band known as the Pops,  will make anyone’s top 10 list. When the weather is nice, take in a concert on Southpark’s north lawn where the Pops perform their summer schedule with Saturday Night concerts in the park. Patriotic music filled the air July 3rd, popular show tunes a few weeks ago, each performance  has its own genre.   Bring something to sit on, I like low chairs, but beach blankets or tarps and sitting on the ground works too, something to drink, chilled wine is good and cold beer works well too, and something to eat if you are hungry. The warmup starts just after 7, so be there by 6:30 for better seats.

So, the year ending concert the 3rd of July drew the largest crowd- a great night completed by fireworks from a nearby parking lot. There were one or two rain-outs, still we made it to two. It is a great way to get out doors, enjoy the cooler evenings with friends and an inexpensive night out- a $5 per person contribution is suggested. Good fun,

Charlotte Go Slow- Our New Mantra?

Charlotte- What’s the holdup?

I’ve heard many Charlotte business leaders, economists and others say- “Charlotte was the last to go into recession, so it will be the first one out.”  I’ve said it myself, but the real answer?   No, Charlotte has not rebounded as fast as others…at least not yet.

Yes I know the realities. The financial meltdown in September 2008 was a severe shock to the system, a significant set back in our region’s economy. We lost about 10% of our financial jobs in the last 12 months- more if you measure by income… and then there was the uncertainty about the BOA HQ…  Sales tax revenue down. Fees and licenses down… lots of bad, that started big time 4th Q 2008.

Nevertheless, Wells Fargo has filled in the void here making its presence known, and, as you’ll see below, we keep bringing new jobs to Charlotte, both in new headquarters, new services and new cultural attractions.  So why this lack of confidence?

Has the city lost its collective Mojo?  Its nerve?

As the nation moves firmly into recovery mode,  it is time for Charlotte’s banks and Charlotte  business  to step up, start investing and hiring and get this economy  growing again, not sit on the sidelines sniping. The national economic news is virtually All Good. The major exception was Jobs until the march figures were released- the US economy had its best month in jobs since December 2007…

The Dow Jones one Year ago-April 6, 2009, was at  7,976  AND  April 5, 2010? it opened 10,971 .. a 37 % increase in one year.

Lets look at GDP, from the Bureau of Economic Statistics… the worst quarter to the best quarter, in just one year.

Massive one year improvements in GDP

2008

2009

3rd Q -2.7 1st Q -6.4
4th Q -5.4 2nd Q -0.7

3rd Q 2.2
4th Q 5.60%

So, in one year, the economy went from 5.4% monthly contraction, to a 5.6% expansion- maybe an expert can tell me, has there ever been a 12 month turnaround so dramatic?

Lets look at jobs

March employment grew by 162,000 in March- wow! Even taking the temporary census workers out, that’s 100,000 per month, a very good start.  But national unemployment remains stubbornly high, at 9.7%  but Charlotte unemployment is worse! For so many years Charlotte was better than the national average- today in Charlotte unemployment is 12.5%, considerably worse, and not showing much sign of improvement.

So, here are the national numbers, again, What’s Up Charlotte?

US Employment- by month

The trend since March, 2009 is quite clear- in a 12 month period the US economy went from losing  500,000 jobs in a month to adding 162,000, one  year later-the most since December 2007, and even adjusted for the hiring of  45,000 temporary Census workers, still a great big jump, and all economists expect this trend to continue.

So has Charlotte been standing still? Not at all, in the last 6 months, Charlotte has:

  • Opened a Ritz Carlton Hotel
  • Opened the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art- a genuinely world class museum reviewed recently in the New York Times
  • Opened the Harvey Gant African-American Museum
  • Announced the headquarter relocation of Electrolux US
  • Announced the headquarter relocation of Husquavarna North America
  • Fifth Third Bank moves its growing operations Uptown
  • Celguard, a lithium battery manufacturer gets a $49M grant from stimulus funds to double production creating about 500 jobs, and making a statement about North Carolina’s energy future. President Obama recently visited the plant.
  • Begun work on the Uptown campus of UNCC, the building serving he quality MBA program is on its way
  • Siemens, a German company, announces $135M investment and expands by over 825 manufacturing jobs

In the next 6 months Charlotte will:

  • Open/Move into the 2nd tallest high rise in the city- The Wells Fargo Cultural Center
  • Open the NASCAR Hall Of Fame
  • Begin the first full seasons of the Knight Theater and NC Music Factory, in Uptown
  • Open the new Mint Museum of Craft and Design at the Cultural Center
  • Open Sugar Creek Greenway-Riverwalk

Yes I know about heart wrenching cuts at local schools, the library fight… all the more reason we need to kick start this economy-paying for services is much easier with an expanding economy.

Real Estate

They say California leads the country, and in so many ways it does, it is an economic bell weather, and Case Shiller reports excellent data from the Golden State on home prices… January home prices in California are up 4% from their low in May 2009, according to Standard and Poor’s Case Shiller.

Reviewing our own Charlotte 1st Q MLS and data assembled in this Charlotte Real Estate Market Report we see Charlotte home sales way up, and home prices up as well for the Quarter over Quarter median cost per square foot -a modest increase of 2.17%.

My local Realtor group economics are up too- with Relocation’s returning in a big way, we are well on our way to a strong 2010.

Homes are still very affordable here… a doctor’s wife from New Jersey, once they figured out the increase to their standard of living, asked me, “Are there buses bringing physicians down to see Charlotte?”

Recently I read an advertisement from a major local employer asking for Americans to join them in pushing for “more responsible spending” in Washington.  This same local business leader is on the record stating they have lots of cash- that they aren’t investing  because the government is spending too much money…  Really?

Virtually every economist in the world knows that government spending MUST go up in recessions to keep them from turning into Depressions.  It was in the good times (when I can’t find any similar advertisements)  that we were supposed to be reducing our debt, so in times of distress we can spend more, so government can be the “spender” of last resort, to keep the economy from caving in. And it has worked.

The US economy is pulling out of the ditch caused by the financial collapse of September 2008- but the US economy began growing in earnest in the 3rd quarter 2009, Charlotte not so much, and Charlotte still is:

  • one of the best educated workforces in the US
  • home to a n airline hub and 8th busiest airport in the US
  • lower cost of living-housing is 79% of the national average -one of cleanest most accessible cities in the US
  • a great climate for outdoor activities
  • centrally located on the East coast

It is past time Charlotte starts growing again. It is time to get off the bench and play ball. Invest in your business, in the region, hire, bring down that unemployment, and lets start growing again. It will be good for your business, for Charlotte and the region.

Terry’s Top Ten List of Charlotte “Must See’s”

on Twitter#CharlotteMUSTSee

So you are coming to Charlotte, coming to see if moving here makes sense…  What should you do while you are here?  Where should you stay?

I started with my ideas and perspectives,  then I asked the twitter-verse for help and got some new ideas

Starting with the last question first, I’d stay in Uptown Charlotte, or the Southpark area. These two spots are centrally located, full of life, and easy jumping off points to the rest of the area. There is a wide selection of hotel and restaurants in each area, from the 5 star Ritz-Carlton across from Epicenter, to 3 Marriot’s Uptown, an Omni and Hilton, or in Southpark, 4 Marriot’s … If golf is your thing, try the Ballantyne hotel. (formerly Ballantyne Resort)

So, this is my list, I’ll make notes for families with children, and I’ve polled some of my younger friends for the 20 something crowd.  Here is what I’d be sure and see, no particular order but as my schedule permitted, and outdoor events are dependent on weather.

NODA- North Davidson (NODA) Gallery Crawls the 1st and 3rd Friday evenings, art and music home in the Arts District. Visit Amelies French Bakery for a sweet, coffee or more, 28th Street late nights or afternoon coffee. Relax in their oh so comfortable European living room.

Museum of the New South- this explains the South and Charlotte’s place as a modern city in the South. My first few

Charlotte "Lynxx" a comfortable ride uptown, $1.25

Charlotte "Lynx" a comfortable ride uptown, $1.25

years in Charlotte I heard constant references to the “New South” never really understanding its meaning- I guess I wasn’t alone because they opened a Musuem by the same name! It isn’t huge, and only needs 90 minutes or so to visit, but it is one of Charlotte’s best. The end of the Old south, andthe start of something new.  There are many hands on exhibits for kids.  Take the Lynx in, visit Imaginnon  (below) and it will be  a great family day.

The Bechtler Modern Art Museum- The Grand Openning 1/2/10 was a huge day in Charlotte- huge for art and the museum when more than 5000 people visited on its first day. Warhol, Degas, Picasso- plus a terrific collection of 20th Century European artists, paint and sculpture, it reminds me of galleries in Washington or New York. It is a huge addition to our art scene, nd the Firebird above guards the entrance. The perfect photo spot.

Walk Uptown on Tryon: A good start is the Levine Museum, witha walk down Tryon to the Bechtler, stop in at the Bank of America Atrium, The Epicenter, Starbucks at Trade, enjoy your coffee outdoors on a pretty day in the green space at Trade and Tryon.

Dilworth-SouthEnd- Art Galleries and Home Furnishings

Southpark and Southpark Area- Everything from Dean and Delucca to Crate and Barrel, Luis Vitton, Coach, Neiman Marcus and Nordstorm’s they are all here. Be sure and visit Phillips Place at Southpark for lunch/dinner or afternoon coffee break at Restoration Hardware. This is also Charlotte’s top dining area with all the national names (Ruth Chris, McCormick and Schmick, Cheesecake Factory) and some of the very best locals such as Nobles, Harpers and Village Tavern.

The US National White Water Center- for an hour or two,  or spend a day of  rafting/mountain biking/climbing – outdoor adventure for all, home of the US Olympic Team for Kayaking. Just 20 minutes from Uptown Charlotte you are out in the wood, or on the  river tackling class 4 and 5 rapids… very cool indeed for you outdoor enthusiasts. There are also miles of mountain biking trails, kayaks for rent or bring your own, and a quality restaurant for lunch and music in the summer evenings.

Fall- Visit Panther (B of A) Stadium for a Panther Game- never pay full price- this NFL stadium is one of the prettiest stadiums in the country, and the whole city tail-gates for home games!  Winter- Visit Time-Warner Arena for a Bobcat game- inexpensive (for the NBA) and all good seats. Stop in at the Epicenter after the game for a drink or food.

Inside the Knight Theater Charlotte

For Families, Uptown- Take the train in and visit Imaginon and Discovery Place for the day. Hands on learning is the key here at the children’s library called Imaginon, and just 2 blocks away you’ll find the newly remodeled Discovery Place Science Center.  Check show schedules  for the Charlotte Children’s Theater at Imaginon, or a Broadway show at the Bluementhall, or take in a smaller show  the new Knight Theater next to and attached to the  Bechtler.  The child friendly Levine Museum of the new South is between Imagginon and  Discovery Place for a look at Charlotte’s roots in the new South.

Carowinds

Paramounts Carowinds offers a great selection of roller coasters, thrill rides and a great water park. Opens every day all summer, weekends from April on, and through October.

Honorable mentions depending on your interests include: The NC Music Factory, The Lowe’s Motor Speedway-if you are into cars, NASCAR opens their Hall of Fame in Charlotte in May, The Mint Museum of Art, and The Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Knights AAA Baseball in Fort Mill, the clubs on College Street, Stowe Botanical Gardens, The Raptor Center, and (35 miles outside Charlotte) Reids Goldmine.

I’m sure I’ve left a bunch of people out- sorry! Any such list has to be subjective in nature. This one certainly is, but I welcome your comments and additions! And if you love water, I could make a whole ‘nother list of Lake Norman and Lake Wylie!
